Primary purpose of the role The role develops and reviews strategic national and state policy and advice for early childhood, government and non-government schools and post-secondary education to ensure that the best possible outcomes are achieved for NSW. The role undertakes high level research, including the scoping of policy proposals and the development of policy options, which the Department can rely on for effective decision-making.
Key knowledge and experience The ability to:
Lead major pieces of work such as Cabinet Submissions or other government submissions.
Synthesize and strategically analyse complex policy issues and their inputs. Use this to support the team’s work, including by informing the NSW and departmental view on policy issues and proposing solutions to policy issues.
Maintain high level written communication, including on complex policy issues. Use this to ensure policy outcomes from your work are understood and argued convincingly.
Develop subject matter expertise over multiple issue areas. Use this to inform and assure work, including by other staff.
Mentor junior staff, including by providing support and leading by example.
Work with stakeholders including line areas to inform our policy positions and shape our work.
Manage multiple, at times conflicting deadlines effectively. Actively re-negotiate deadlines or seek to shift workload as needed.
Continuously seek to improve business systems, process and resources needs.
Conduct recruitment activities as required.
Essential requirements Knowledge of and commitment to the Department’s Aboriginal Education and Training policies.
